2.) Installation

There are lots of reasons to love wood floors. Not only is wood beautiful, but it’s also soft and warm underfoot, easy to clean, and hypoallergenic.

A solid wood floor will last for more than a century, and the finish can be refreshed whenever it wears thin. “Wood is a living material,” says architect Ross Chapin, of Whidbey Island, Wash., “and it brings life to the house.” So preferred are wood floors, in fact, that just having them increases the value of a home.

The good news is that there’s a lot to choose from. Choices today include not only old-fashioned solid wood strips in the usual maple or oak, but also flooring milled from exotic or regional species, or even cut from the remains of 200-year-old barns. The options also include engineered wood products — authentic-looking surfaces that can take wood floors where they’ve never gone before. And then there’s the growing family of laminates which, while not wood, can satisfy the demand for a wood-floor appearance at a much lower cost.

All have their pros and cons and more than a few similarities. It is possible to get a plank look in an engineered floor, for example, just as it is possible to buy prefinished solid boards and skip the dust and disruption of finishing on-site. We all might be sold on looks in the end, but it’s important to remember that when it comes to today’s wood flooring products, there’s a lot going on beneath the surface.

Just as there are many different species of trees, there are many different species of wood floors! Popular types of wood flooring include Oak, Birch, Cherry, Maple, Bamboo and Walnut. Looking for something a little more exotic?  Rare woods like Brazilian Chestnut, Ebony, Ivory Maple and Gingerwood beautifully accent a room and the color doesn’t fade.

Choose a wood based on your home’s style and your lifestyle. For example, if you want hardwoods in your entryway, you may want to steer clear of Cherry wood. Cherry wood is a soft wood and should be used for accents – it wouldn’t last well in a highly trafficked area like an entry way.

3.) Recoating an existing floor

Oil-Modified or Polyurethane Finishes are one of the most commonly used materials offering a wide range of applications on both new and in service wood flooring. Polyurethanes offer an excellent combination of high gloss, depth of appearance, durability and reasonable cost. They are offered in a wide range of solids contents for different applications and effects with 40% materials generally being used as penetrating-type sealers, and 50% polyurethanes used as finish coats. With correct floor preparation, polyurethanes are relatively, hard to get even and should be done by someone who has many years of experience. They have positive adhesion characteristics; and with some variations among different manufacturers’ materials, are generally ready to do a second coat after about 8 hours in our region. Polyurethane finishes usually dry within 8 hours depending on prevailing environmental conditions. This can be a consideration if a floor must be taken out of and put back into service quickly. Additional considerations are that polyurethanes are inclined to darken somewhat over time, are degraded by constant exposure to ultraviolet light, and are most effectively removed either mechanically by sanding or grinding. With proper equipment and knowledge this process can be done relatively quickly.
